The Pyrenees region is located in the heart of Western Victoria and is a charming land of rolling hills, valleys and stunning rocky peaks.
It is often referred to as the ‘natural garden of Victoria’ and is becoming renowned for rich red wines made principally from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz varieties.
Vines were first planted in 1848 but these did not survive. Revivalist vineyards were then planted in the 1960s and 70s. It was during this same period that the Pyrenees region was selected by the French Remy Martin group for the production of brandy and cognac for the European market. With the demise of brandy some time later, Remy Martin then focused on their next area of expertise – sparkling wine.
That first vineyard is now named the Blue Pyrenees Estate and has now been joined by a long list of highly reputed neighbours including the well known Taltarni, Redbank, Mount Avoca and Warrenmang.
With the combination of French expertise, international and local backing, microclimates, different soils and the passion that exists amongst the regional wine makers, the region has also become recognized for its full-bodied dry whites and for sparkling wines made by the authentic Champagne method.
